Mark 6:30-34View commentary related to this passage

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

30 The apostles gathered round Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.

31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.

32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.

33 But many who saw them leaving recognised them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.

34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

Mark 6:53-56View commentary related to this passage

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.

54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognised Jesus.

55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.

56 And wherever he went— into villages, towns or countryside— they placed the sick in the market-places. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.

Tuesday 21st July is this month's Editor's deadline.

A Church Near You

Want to while away some time?

The diocesan insert in the 'The Herald' this month mentions the internet site 'A Church Near You' (www.achurchnearyou.com). Have you had a look at this site?

If you look for Berkeley, when you get there click on 'Find Us' and finally click on 'Show entire parish' you will see an outline of the parish. Along the eastern boundary there are several detached parts - find the adjoining parishes to sort things out. But what about the missing field on the Matford plain near the point-to-point course? Also you will find that Lorridge Farm, between Berkeley Heath and Berkeley Road is not in the parish of a nearby church. These last two belong to the same parish.

make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob.
Take the song, bring hither the tabret

Blow up the trumpet in the new-moon

You could lead the congregation in prayer

At the recent Pentecost Praise evensong, Revd John Witcombe preached on the power of the Holy Spirit and how it can work through us in the mission of the church.  There are many ways in how we can support and actively take part in the work of the church.  Ray Chaney's Christmas Card list is a testament to the wide range of support the congregation provides St Mary's.  I would ask you to consider the possibility of leading the congregation in prayer at Intercessions.  You don't have to start with a blank sheet (unless you want to).  There are books and guides that help to link the readings of the day to the prayers.  The Church of England web site is an excellent resource if you have access to the web.  Pam Curtis is currently compiling the next quarter's rota.  If anyone is interested in becoming an intercessor then please talk to one of the clergy who will be happy to provide guidance.

Mark 5:21-43 (New International Version - UK)

A Dead Girl and a Sick Woman
When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered round him while he was by the lake.
Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live. So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realised that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, Who touched my clothes? You see the people crowding against you, his disciples answered, and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering. While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. Your daughter is dead, they said. Why bother the teacher any more? Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, Don't be afraid; just believe. He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. He went in and said to them, Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep. But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, Talitha koum! (which means, Little girl, I say to you, get up!). Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

St. Mary's Newsletter 21st June

Blog readers,

This week's newsletter starts with a short report of three events, all of which took place last weekend.

Cadbury World Youth Trip

On Saturday 13th June our youth group took a coach trip to Cadbury World for the day.
The party which included 19 young people from the Berkeley area was a great success. Although Ray Chaney looked after the stash of chocolate that we acquired on the tour round the Centre, we hope to finish it off with Hot dogs and Marshmallows around a bonfire in his garden on Friday night (19th) when we next meet. We had a very cheery and helpful coach driver and the weather was perfect. Everyone behaved and enjoyed them selves including the leaders!
Rev'd Christine Birkett

Songs of Praise at Hill

A wonderful evening of Hymn singing was had by all who attended the Hill Songs of Praise led by Reverend Christine Birkett.
Starting off with the famous hymn from Handel's Oratorio, Judas Maccabeus  "Thine be the Glory" followed by many much loved favourites and finishing with the famous Swedish folk song and hymn "How great thou Art"
A big thanks must go to Ruth and Chris for their superb organ playing and to all who prepared such wonderful food and drink for after the service.
David Bainbridge

Thornbury Orchestra

A superb performance by Thornbury Orchestra, along with that of soloist Elin White gave rise to an extremely convivial evening last Saturday 13th June.
Works by local composer Jonathan Trim, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius enthralled a very well attended audience, and the evening was complemented by interval refreshments supplied by the church's social team. Well done to all concerned, it was a very pleasant community event.
Richard Pring

Father's Day
Lost for Words? Put God in your card

The Church of England is making a bid to put God into Fathers' Day with a prayer for children to include in their cards on June 21, asking God to help dads grow in love and wisdom. Bishop of Worcester John Inge is heading up the initiative.

I thank God for all the love and support you offer me,
and I ask for God's blessing on you this Father's day:
may God our heavenly Father keep you in his care,
support and guide you each day
and help you grow in love and wisdom.
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BIG DAY – 4th July 2009 Gloucester
From 10.00am on Saturday July 4th children and families from our communities have been invited to join hundreds of others from across the Diocese in the Park in Gloucester. There we will be joined by clowns, marching bands and 3 bishops to lead us through the city to the cathedral.
The incredible
Psalm Drummers will welcome us to the Cathedral - and from noon there will be over 75 activities and performances for accompanied children from 0 – 12 years and their adults to experience.
There will be break-dancing and climbing walls, spiders and snakes, dancing and drama, food and computers, animation and magic, stories and drawing, poems and prayers, politicians and police officers, charities and chattering, football and rugby, karate and tractors and plays and choirs and food to buy and a farmer's market and more besides…
check the
website regularly for updates. Finally there will be Evensong in the cathedral nave – but with a bit of a difference!
It's going to be the most amazing day out and FREE – it costs nothing to be there. You don't need to register, just come along on the day…
Invite the grandchildren, godchildren, nieces and nephews. Encourage your friends.. it'll be a day to remember!
Parking: Vehicles with 7 or more people will be able to park free at King's school.
Otherwise extensive parking is available at the Docks or the park 'n' ride sites near Gloucester.
What to bring: a packed lunch, some money for small items.
You might like to make a banner for the procession, either as a family or with others.
If you'd like to help make a banner with other people and haven't got a group to work with, please contact the vicar or curate and we'll try to link people up.

Congratulations to Christine on her Ordination!
