Darwin & God - The Sequel!

Thursday 12 November 2009 7.30 pm at the Jenner Museum Old Cyder House

Since 'Walking on Dinosaurs: Trampling on God?' in late September, various people have expressed interest in an opportunity to ask more questions and discuss the issues raised during the presentations by Richard Avery and Tim Walsh. So that is the purpose of this follow-up evening. You're also welcome if you didn't make it to the last talk but would like an opportunity to come to an evening on this subject.

This sequel will be more informal, discussion orientated and centred on the issues of concern to participants, but Richard will bring some short snippets on Intelligent Design and the Dawkins Delusion in case they are of interest.

Coffee and tea refreshments will be included.

There's no formal entry cost, but donations toward the
expenses would be appreciated.

It is fine to turn up on the night.
If you can let us know you are coming, do phone/email the Jenner Museum
 (education@edwardjenner.co.uk 01453 810631)
or Richard Avery (averys@rjavery.co.uk 01453 810294)

Civic Remembrance Service

At today's service we welcome members of Local Councils, representatives of the Royal British Legion, the RAOB, the Merchant Navy and the Coastguard. We also welcome Berkeley Scouts, Cubs and Beavers; Sharpness Guides, Brownies and Rainbows; and Berkeley Brownies and Rainbows. They will all join with local residents for our annual civic service of remembrance.

John 5:36-47

I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. I do not accept praise from men, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.I  have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God? But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?

St Mary's Newsletter

St. Mary's Newsletter 18th October

Blog readers,

For many years we have been fortunate to have two Readers, Steve Chandler and Trevor Chamberlain, assisting with worship in St Mary's and the other two churches of our benefice. Over this summer David Frith has been exploring a vocation to Reader ministry with the full support of the PCC. David had his final interview for selection this past week. I am delighted to report that David was recommended wholeheartedly and has begun his three-year training course (part-time!). David is involved in Sunday worship already, in Bible reading and leading intercessions. In the New Year he will start to extend his experience with occasional preaching, alongside his weekly studies. If you'd like to find out more about what David is undertaking, do talk to him.

Healing Ministry in Worship

This Sunday evening we are focussing on God's work of healing in the evening Communion service. Being St Luke's Day gives us a natural link to the theme, as Luke was a doctor himself and his Gospel takes a particular interest in the healing ministry of Jesus. But how does this engage with our meeting for worship? Here's a helpful summary reflection on healing in the context of worship by a vicar in Surrey:

"It is worth recalling that the words healing, wholeness and holiness are all derived from the same root. Healing ministry is neither an alternative to seeking the help of the medical profession nor are we talking of miracle cures. Of course some people are healed of their earthly ailment, but for many healing is that strengthening of faith, that greater closeness to God, which is the preparation for true wholeness and healing which we only attain when we meet our Lord in heaven. But it also gives us the strength to cope day by day. In our earthly life none of us are whole but we are all on that journey to true wholeness.

Christian healing is done in the name of the Risen Lord. It is Christ who heals, when we lay on hands we are just a channel of that healing love. We are not healers, we have no personal power, it is Christ alone who heals, through his sacrifice for us on the Cross.

A Healing Service is for anyone. It is not to deny the healing power of prayer or of Communion ; it certainly doesn't mean we should not pray for the sick in the intercessions. But it offers the opportunity for personal prayer for oneself or someone else through words and the laying on of hands, which if you don't quite understand, is hands being laid gently on the head and shoulders while prayers are being said. It is also possible to receive anointing with oil. You may ask for special prayer or not, but it doesn't make any difference for God knows us better than we know ourselves, he knows our illnesses, our worries better than we do."

This Sunday evening we'll use a Communion service booklet that has been used in St Mary's before. It includes the opportunity to receive personal prayer in the side chapel area after coming to the Communion rails.

Do come and join us.

Harvest

Last Sunday we celebrated harvest at three services. Many members of the farming community attended the evening service and were able to see the gifts that had been presented earlier in the day. Thanks must go to those who spent time preparing for the services, those who decorated the church, the groups who prepared music and also the suppliers of the cheese buffet at the end of the day.

Dr Ruth Richardson

Sunday 11th October, 3.30pm

Gray's Anataomy is to the human body what Mrs Beeton's is to cookery or Roget's is to thesaurus. It started out as a student text in 1858 and became so indispensable that it has been called 'The Doctor's Bible'. The book has never been out of print. This talk tells the story behind the famous medical text, how it was created by two young medical men in mid-Victorian London: Henry Gray and Vandyke Carter.

The Court of King's Bench, 1832

By custom in the parish of Berkeley, divided as it is into the several tithings, there are four churchwardens, the customary mode of electing whom is as follows. A notice is given in the parish church that the churchwardens desire a meeting in the vestry on Easter Tuesday, to choose churchwardens for the town and tithings for the year ensuing. At the meeting held in pursuance of such notice, an inhabitant of each tithing is separately proposed and nominated as the new churchwarden for such tithing. The churchwarden for the tithing of Alkington is usually nominated first in order, and afterwards the rest, one after another. It is customary for the outgoing churchwarden of each tithing to propose his successor, and the person so proposed is usually nominated without opposition ; but in case of opposition, then the successor is nominated by the majority of the inhabitants then present of the tithing for which he is to serve, and in this nomination the inhabitants of the other tithings never interfere. As far as living memory goes, each churchwarden has been an inhabitant of the tithing for which he served.

No churchwarden ever acts out of the tithing for which he is appointed, except the signing the presentment annually made to the archdeacon of the state of repair of the church, and other  presentable matters, which are signed by all four churchwardens, can be so considered. There is no church-rate made for the tithing of the town of Berkeley, but the church is repaired by rates out of the other tithings. When a sum of money is required for other expenses, towards which the church-rate is applicable, the parish clerk, who is also vestry clerk, divides the amount required into three equal parts, and makes a separate rate for each of the three other tithings for one-third, although the extent and value of such tithings are not equal. Such rate is allowed by the inhabitants of each of such tithings in vestry. The rate, when collected, is paid to the vestry clerk, who keeps separate accounts for each of the churchwardens, and such accounts are allowed by the inhabitants of each of such tithings.

Leonard Stanley is the parish that has a detached part in Berkeley parish. The above is part of the report of a case in the Court of King's Bench. There was a dispute about tithes being due to either Alkington or Leonard Stanley. Matters were complicated by the recently retired churchwarden for Berkeley having 'acting out of his tithing'.
