Jesus Prays for His Disciples (John 17:6-19 TNIV)

6 "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

13 "I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Ascension Day

7.30pm Holy Communion, Benefice Service at All Saints' Stone

Ascension Day used to be celebrated much more than it is today. In the past some schools even had the day off! Coming on a Thursday, as it always does, it can get overlooked. However it does mark the significant time when Jesus finished his earthly ministry as he commissioned his disciples to go into the world to share the love and forgiveness of God through Jesus and prepare the way for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Sidesmen

Did you know that that our Sidesmen have a duty under Canon E2 to promote the cause of true religion in the parish, and to assist the Churchwardens in the discharge of their duties, in maintaining order and decency in the church and churchyard, and especially during the time of divine service?

We have moved on a bit since that was written in 1921 but still need sidesmen to carry out other duties, such as "setting up" for services and being on hand to welcome people into our church, with a smile and a hymn book etc.

Sidesmen are the ambassadors of our church, and there greeting is often the catalyst to cause people to return to our church.

Could you be a Sidesman? If so please contact me or any of our Churwardens, we would love to have you on board. It is not to onerous, perhaps one or two services a month maximum. Please give it thought and a try, you will find it very worthwhile.

The Vine and the Branches

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

Help needed if flu hits Berkeley

Mayor Val Watts is taking initiative to arrange support for people living on their own in the event of them being house-bound because of flu. She's looking for volunteers to help deliver medicines and/or basic food supplies from the shops in town. The deliveries will target those people on their own and who do not have family or friends around to assist them. All deliveries will be in the Berkeley Town district and helpers will be asked to leave supplies on the doorstep, ring the bell and go without direct contact with the person inside.
If you think you might be able to help, please put your name and phone number on the sheet at the back of church (available Sunday only) or phone Val on 01453 810564.

Church Meetings

Last Sunday we held our two annual Church meetings.
We had the meeting for the election of churchwardens when three of the churchwardens were re-elected there now being one vacancy which we hope will be filled soon.
There was also the Berkeley Annual Parochial Church Meeting when reports were presented, copies are available should you wish to read them. Members of the congregation were elected to the PCC (church council) there now being two vacancies.
Most parishes have two churchwardens, having four helps to spread out the tasks and the PCC has active members but a couple more members would be of benefit. The May edition of The Herald has details of the new PCC membership.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father— and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life— only to take it up again. No-one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.

Pigs and Pearls

Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.
