John 6 (The Message)

Bread and Fish for All

1After this, Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee (some call it Tiberias). 2A huge crowd followed him, attracted by the miracles they had seen him do among the sick. 3When he got to the other side, he climbed a hill and sat down, surrounded by his disciples. 4It was nearly time for the Feast of Passover, kept annually by the Jews.

5When Jesus looked out and saw that a large crowd had arrived, he said to Philip, "Where can we buy bread to feed these people?" 6He said this to stretch Philip's faith. He already knew what he was going to do.

7Philip answered, "Two hundred silver pieces wouldn't be enough to buy bread for each person to get a piece."

8One of the disciples—it was Andrew, brother to Simon Peter—said, 9"There's a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But that's a drop in the bucket for a crowd like this."

10Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." There was a nice carpet of green grass in this place. They sat down, about five thousand of them. 11Then Jesus took the bread and, having given thanks, gave it to those who were seated. He did the same with the fish. All ate as much as they wanted.

12When the people had eaten their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather the leftovers so nothing is wasted." 13They went to work and filled twelve large baskets with leftovers from the five barley loaves.

14The people realized that God was at work among them in what Jesus had just done. They said, "This is the Prophet for sure, God's Prophet right here in Galilee!" 15Jesus saw that in their enthusiasm, they were about to grab him and make him king, so he slipped off and went back up the mountain to be by himself.

16In the evening his disciples went down to the sea, 17got in the boat, and headed back across the water to Capernaum. It had grown quite dark and Jesus had not yet returned. 18A huge wind blew up, churning the sea. 19They were maybe three or four miles out when they saw Jesus walking on the sea, quite near the boat. They were scared senseless, 20but he reassured them, "It's me. It's all right. Don't be afraid." 21So they took him on board. In no time they reached land—the exact spot they were headed to.

Mark 6:30-34View commentary related to this passage

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

30 The apostles gathered round Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.

31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.

32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.

33 But many who saw them leaving recognised them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.

34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

Mark 6:53-56View commentary related to this passage

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.

54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognised Jesus.

55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.

56 And wherever he went— into villages, towns or countryside— they placed the sick in the market-places. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.

The Herald

Tuesday 21st July is this month's Editor's deadline.

A Church Near You

Want to while away some time?

The diocesan insert in the 'The Herald' this month mentions the internet site 'A Church Near You' (www.achurchnearyou.com). Have you had a look at this site?

If you look for Berkeley, when you get there click on 'Find Us' and finally click on 'Show entire parish' you will see an outline of the parish. Along the eastern boundary there are several detached parts - find the adjoining parishes to sort things out. But what about the missing field on the Matford plain near the point-to-point course? Also you will find that Lorridge Farm, between Berkeley Heath and Berkeley Road is not in the parish of a nearby church. These last two belong to the same parish.

The anthem this evening is based on Psalm 81: 1-4

O sing joyfully unto God our strength
make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob.
Take the song, bring hither the tabret
the merry harp with the lute.
Blow up the trumpet in the new-moon
even in the time appointed,
and upon our solemn feast-day.
For this was made a statute for Israel
and a law of the God of Jacob.
